Interpretation

Now the next step should be to interpret the material with the aim to draw a picture of the field and of the relation of the people living there. You summarise your results not only by condensing topics, but also by sampling information about the kind of community and by detecting the social fabric of the community.

The techniques are quite simple:

Topics

  • Condensation of interviews to utterances. What did the person say in general? What did he/she suggest? What did he/she critisize? Which ideas is he/she promoting?
  • These utterances are clustered, that is you bring utterances refering to the same topic together

People

  • Analysis of the environment of the field (people, places, relations), best: representation in a poster

Your results are:

  • The community`s social fabric, it shows the relevant groups
  • Utterances about the perceptions of the people
  • Knowledge of places where people meet and discuss

Feedback

At the end of your adventure you invite the people you worked with in order to present your analysis and to discuss it. This workshop (or any other event) might also serve as a kick-off for a concrete change-action.

This fotograph is a document of our work in the 2nd district of Vienna - it is a kind of installation that summarizes our analysis and was presented to the people we had interviewed before. It triggered a lively discussion. See: http://www.taste.at/index1.html
